On the first weekend of November, Chania organized a seabed cleanup operation in the Venetian Port. During two days, volunteers pulled hundreds of various types of waste from the water, including bottles, tires, various metal parts and beverage cans, shoes, clothes, tourist hats, and even... carpets.
While the presence of hats among these trophies can be understood, the fact that a dozen or so carpets were pulled out of the seabed indicates that it is necessary to further raise ecological awareness, especially among local residents. Disposing of rubbish in this way is harmful, first of all, to the marine environment, and consequently to humans.
The finds were sorted and will be sent for recycling. About 200 people worked in the cleanup, including 16 divers. The organizer of this year's cleanup was the Attica Group, which includes Anek Lines, one of the largest companies in Greece involved in maritime passenger transport.
