A successful season in Knossos and on the island of Spinalonga

The Minoan palace of Knossos and Spinalonga, the island where lepers were once exiled, are the most popular monuments in Crete. This year, their popularity is breaking all records.

Since the beginning of this year until August 31, more than half a million tickets have been sold in Knossos, or 542,689 to be exact, breaking the record set in 2023, which is considered a very successful season. In detail, the number of guests in each month is as follows:

• January: 4974
• February: 8220
• March: 18,402
• April: 90,178
• May: 119,894
• June: 119,001
• July: 165 168
• August: 181,687

There is of course no data for September yet, but Nikos Papadakis, the governor of Knossos, says that an average of 4,500 tickets are sold every day, and the number of visitors this month has never fallen below 3,500 per day.

Compared to last year's data, the results for every month of this year are better. The only exception is June, when the number of guests was lower by over 4 thousand.

A slightly lower number of visitors this year was recorded on the island of Spinalonga. So far in 2024, the former leprosarium has been visited by almost 400,000 people. The mayor of Agios Nikolaos, Manolis Menegakis, says that many of the visitors are returning visitors to the island. Some of them visited the place a long time ago, and the renovation of some of the buildings carried out a few years ago is a good opportunity to visit the place again. Thanks to this, one can better imagine how leprosy patients functioned here.

Currently, the commune is strongly seeking to have Spinalonga listed as a UNESCO protected site. The second major challenge today is to install lighting on the island. Currently, a lighting project is being considered that will give the impression that Spinalonga is inhabited at night. The commune is waiting for a decision on financing. This project is to remind us of the long-standing presence of people on this island, and this specific visual narrative, especially at night, would take on a special character.

Też potwierdzam - Spinalonga piękna i sorry że niestety pomarudzę, ale gdyby tak więcej miejsc na Krecie było z tak turkusową wodą w morzu...
