Dangerous fire in the Kotsifou Gorge area

Yesterday, at quarter past midnight, a fire that was difficult to control and dangerous broke out right next to the Kotsifou Gorge in Rethymno Prefecture. The fire quickly spread to large sizes and began to dangerously approach the villages of Myrthios and Sellia, located above the famous tourist town of Plakias.

Initially, the fire was even brought under control, but after 3 a.m. the fire flared up again. The fight against the flames lasted for many hours, and the fire was finally extinguished only with the help of a firefighting helicopter.

The situation was so serious that messages were sent to residents of threatened villages to be vigilant. I guess no one slept soundly that night, because the inhabitants of this region of Crete are well aware of how fast and dangerous a fire becomes when it is accompanied by strong winds.

The fire brigade operation was attended by 120 firefighters, employees of other services and a large number of volunteers and residents of nearby towns. In addition to the helicopter, 50 fire engines were also brought to the site. Unfortunately, there are very serious suspicions that the fire was the result of arson. An investigation will now be carried out in connection with these allegations. The investigation department noticed a strange coincidence between the time of the fire and the intensification of wind gusts, the strength of which exceeded 7 degrees on the Beaufort scale. Additionally, a few days earlier, a large fire also broke out in the same area.
