Although the maximum daily temperatures in Crete have decreased in recent days, the overall hydrological and weather situation on the island has not improved much. In many areas, the heatwave that swept across the island literally dried out the local vegetation. This not only significantly increased the risk of fire, but also caused many losses among local crops. The damage to some plantations is so severe that the authorities decided to launch special subsidies for farmers.
High temperatures and windy weather can be troublesome even on the beach
Another victim of high temperatures is the local water supply infrastructure. In several places on the island, the installation unfortunately failed when tested by high water demand. There are local shortages or supply interruptions. An example is the area of Kissamos, where one of the most important pipelines failed. Due to the critical situation, local authorities banned watering olive groves until the leak was repaired. A similar situation occurs in the area of Gerani, where in some areas there are long-term interruptions in water supply due to a failure of the local water supply. Given the current high temperatures, this is not only troublesome for local residents and tourists, but also a big problem for local farmers who cannot irrigate their fields or supply water to their animals.
In many places, the condition of water supply networks in Crete leaves much to be desired
No major cooling is expected in Crete in the coming days. Unfortunately, strong northern winds are forecast, which will significantly increase the fire risk. The Local Fire Department appeals to refrain from any activities that involve operating open fire during this period. In particular, it is prohibited to use machines that cause sparks (e.g. saws or welders), light fires or use a barbecue in the open. The commander of the Fire Department in Chania, Mr. Xenofont Tsilimigakis, announced that in justified cases, high fines will be imposed on people who do not comply with these prohibitions.
Forecasted strong winds also pose a threat to any smaller vessels moving around the north coast. The Central Port Authority of Heraklion issued a statement in which it called on the owners of this type of boats and ships to stay in the port and check whether they were properly moored to the quay. Additionally, the Port Authority ordered that during difficult sea conditions, owners of recreational ships should refrain from conducting their tourist activities.

Ogromne temperatury, zimne morze i baseny.

Monika Jańczak Zimna woda w maju to raczej norma.
