According to the latest data published today, as much as 95.8% of bathing waters in Greece are of excellent quality. Outside Greece, the highest percentage of excellent quality waters is found in Cyprus (97.6%), Croatia (96.7%) and Austria (96.9%).
The assessment of bathing water quality is prepared every year based on the guidelines contained in the 2006 EU directive. 85.4% of marine bathing areas in Europe met the strictest EU standards for 'excellent' bathing water quality. 96% of all bathing waters meet minimum quality standards, with only 1.5% rated as 'poor'. For comparison, excellent water quality is found in only 79% of inland bathing areas.
Every year, data summarizing bathing water quality is published in a report prepared by the European Environment Agency in cooperation with the European Commission. However, we would like to point out that the basic criterion for assessing the quality of bathing water is the presence of Escherichia coli and Enterococcus fecal bacteria, which pose a direct threat to human health.
Since 2006, when the Bathing Water Directive was adopted, the proportion of poor quality water has declined over the decade and has remained relatively stable since 2015.
