Unusual Easter in Crete

This weekend, Orthodox Greeks begin to celebrate their most important holiday, Easter. Holy Saturday, which falls today, is the last day of the 40-day fast. Tonight, the faithful will gather in churches for the Great Resurrection Mass, where, after passing the fire brought from Jerusalem to the faithful, the words Χριστός Ανέστη will be said! Christos Anesti !, meaning Christ is Risen !, to which the faithful will respond Αληθώς Ανέστη! Alithos Αnesti !, or He is truly Risen !
This year's holidays in Crete, however, will be slightly different from the usual due to the serious fire threat. Due to very strong winds, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection sent an urgent directive to the Cretan Fire Department prohibiting the burning of the Judas effigy in order not to spread the fires.

Burning Judas is one of the customs associated with the Easter tradition and is very popular in Crete. This time, however, safety considerations turned out to be more important. To motivate Cretans to comply with this ban, penalties were also increased just in case someone decided to fulfill the Easter custom. Everything indicates that this year, tsoukrisma , the custom of tapping red-dyed eggs, will have to be enough for the Cretans.
