In the last week of March, the first charter flights to Crete coincided with the Catholic Easter holidays, which made the beginning of the tourist season really optimistic. Only between March 22 and 31, 16,000 tourists flew to Crete. This means that for the entire month the result is better than the same period last year by as much as 46%.
About 20 planes from outside Greece arrive at Heraklion Airport every day. This number is expected to increase significantly after April 20. Currently, 15-18% of hotels in the Heraklion prefecture are open, while on an island-wide basis the percentage of hotels open is currently 14-15%. In open hotels, occupancy reaches 60%. According to the president of the hoteliers' association in Heraklion, Nikos Chalkiadakis, all seasonal hotels will be open by mid-May at the latest.
Unfortunately, it is expected that the prices of tourist packages will be slightly higher compared to last year's prices. Hotels have to face, among other things, large increases in food prices, which of course affects the cost of stay. The shortage of hotel staff is also a growing problem, as many people continue to leave the industry. There are, of course, many reasons, one of them is the lack of action on the part of the Greek government to introduce solutions that would make it easier for workers in this industry to survive in the period between tourist seasons, i.e. during the 5 months when there are no tourists on the island.
