The continuing popularity of Crete is reflected in the tourism data reports prepared by INSETE (Institute of the Hellenic Confederation of Tourism). According to these data, Crete generated as much as 21% of tourism revenues in Greece. This gave the island second place in the ranking of 13 regions of the country.
The highest revenues from tourism were generated by the South Aegean Islands (27%). This region includes 13 islands, the most popular of which include: Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini and Kos. As we mentioned above, the second place in this ranking was taken by Crete (21%). The next regions that provided Greece with the highest revenues from tourism are the Attica region (17%), the Ionian Islands (15%), which include the popular Corfu and Zakynthos. Fifth place belongs to Central Macedonia, which generated 9% of revenues in the past tourist season. It is impossible not to notice that the five regions mentioned above were jointly responsible for as much as 89% of tourism revenues.
