The Christmas and New Year period is a time of intense travel in Greece. However, this time is not only intended for traveling to hometowns. It is also a good time for a short vacation, and in terms of tourist interests, Crete is one of the most popular choices. The interest in traveling is reflected not only in reservations in Cretan hotels. Other winter destinations in Greece are also very often chosen, where during the two weeks of holidays (Christmas, New Year, Epiphany) the reservation level is very high and reaches up to 90%. Tourist agencies are also reporting increased tourist traffic.

The president of the Heraklion Hotel Association, Nikos Chalkiadakis, said that the current reservations in hotels in Cretan cities reach 70%. Rethymno and Chania are more popular than Heraklion. Private accommodation and guesthouses located in local villages also record a similar level of room reservations. However, most of their guests at this time of year are not foreigners, but mainly Greeks and Cypriots. Many people book short 3-4 day stays. By the way, it is worth noting that local prices have increased by about 10% compared to last year.

Foreign trips are also popular among Greeks, which is visible in the very high occupancy of flights, including direct ones from Heraklion. Tour operators list Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Switzerland, Italy, France and England as the most frequently chosen tourist destinations. This year, places for Christmas trips were booked from November. The average cost of a holiday on the continent this year ranges from 750 to 1,100 euros.
