Temperatures like in summer and a growing problem with water

Today in Crete, the daytime temperature exceeded 30 degrees in many places, and the warmest on the island was the Heraklion prefecture. Such heat, more associated with summer, affected not only Crete and the rest of Greece, but also reached the Balkan region. Meteorologists say that such high temperatures at the end of October are unprecedented. In some places, thermometers show even 32-33 degrees, and the deviation from the average temperature from 1991-2020 exceeds 13-15 degrees.

The second bottom is... a water tank

And it might seem that this is good news, were it not for the other side of this situation, i.e. the deepening drought in Crete. The water level in the Aposelemi dam, which supplies the municipalities of Heraklion, Hersonissos and Agios Nikolaos, has decreased to 4,500,000 cubic meters of water, of which only 2.5 million liters can be pumped. The remaining 2 million is an iron reserve that cannot be used for security reasons.

Already at the end of May, it was warned that the water in this reservoir would only last until the end of this year. Unfortunately, the weather this year did not improve the situation. The constantly decreasing reserve means that municipalities that are supplied with water from the Aposelemi reservoir will have to find other solutions, including: drilling in your area. Due to the difficult situation, a meeting of representatives of municipalities that use the water collected in this dam has been convened for tomorrow.

Fajnie jest korzystać tak długo z pogody. Sezon się wydłuża. No ale podstawą do życia czyli woda znika w coraz szybszym tempie. Co nas czeka za 10-20 lat?

Mirek Jarek Nawet nie trzeba będzie czekać tak długo. Wody w Aposelemi wystarczy do końca tego roku. Jeśli nie będzie deszczu, a zima będzie bezśnieżna to problem z wodą słodką we wschodniej Krecie będzie naprawdę duży.

Lubię Greków za bezpośredniość, gościnność czy to że w sezonie potrafią pracować po kilkanaście godzin na dobę i być uśmiechnięci. Ale uparte betonowanie wszystkiego co się da a następnie ciągłe mycie tego wężem z bieżącą wodą mnie zawsze się nie podobało. Muszą nauczyć się szanować wodę inaczej nie będą mieli co pić - a wtedy turystyka stanowiąca jedną z podstaw gospodarki przejdzie do historii. Mam nadzieję że nie - że do historii przejdą jakże częste obrazki ściekającej przez całą wioskę wody bo ktoś myje schody ogromną jej ilością.

Leszek Czaczkowski No niestety. Ale coraz mniejsze rezerwy wody to nie jedyne konsekwencje zmian. Słabe zbiory oliwek, a co za tym idzie mała produkcja oliwy, o czym piszemy od kilku tygodni, to również wynik szalejącego klimatu.
