The horrific accident happened today around 11 o'clock in the Samaria Gorge. This event was caused by an earthquake that happened a few minutes earlier. As a result, a landslide and rock fragments broke off, which rolled down the slope also in the area of the hiking trail. Unfortunately, one of them fell on a 45-year-old tourist from Spain, who unfortunately happened to be in this place.
The accident happened about half way along the trail. Immediately after receiving the report, a large rescue operation was organized, in which 25 people from the emergency services took part. A helicopter flew to the area of the accident with doctors and rescuers on board. The seriously injured man was first transported to the former settlement of Samaria, from where he was then taken by helicopter to a hospital in Chania. Unfortunately, it was necessary to decide to amputate the right leg at the level of the thigh. Due to the fact that the man lost a lot of blood, he is currently still intubated in a very serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
The earthquake, which occurred today at 10:49 am, had a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale and was located 7 km east of Sougia. After his occurrence, text messages were immediately sent to the inhabitants of the region to be careful and avoid dangerous places. Due to the ongoing tourist season and the risk of aftershocks, it was also decided to close all gorges and trails in the prefectures of Chania and Rethymno until Tuesday, August 15 inclusive. An announcement on further action is expected on Tuesday evening. The decision to open trails and ravines will depend on the development of the seismic situation. Immediately after this fatal accident was reported, the Samaria Gorge was also closed and the evacuation of the more than 660 tourists remaining in the area began.
