Although the fire risk forecast for tomorrow in Crete has been lowered by one notch from the highest level 5, the local authorities warn that the situation remains very serious. Throughout the island, it is strictly forbidden to use open fire, as well as to carry out any work that could cause a possible fire. There is still a ban on staying and moving around NATURA 2000 areas as well as forest ecosystems, parks and other sensitive areas.
It is worth remembering about these restrictions, because breaking them can be quite expensive. As an example of the severity of these consequences, it is worth mentioning the two most recent cases of administrative penalties imposed. One of them took place in the area of Krya Vrisi, where the Fire Department noticed a beekeeper working in a particularly sensitive area with a smoker, where there was an active source of fire. And although his actions may seem quite trivial to us, the services were relentless and imposed a fine of PLN 1,000 on him. €.
However, an inhabitant of the Xerokampos region showed extreme stupidity, who, despite the fact that today was the highest fire risk level, decided to burn the remains of crops left after the harvest as part of the cleaning work. His fire started a small fire. The man was fined Rs 2,000. €, which we hope will stay in his memory for a long time.
Fortunately, today these are the only incidents recorded in Crete. All services are on high alert. Preventive patrols are also carried out in order to respond to possible fires as quickly as possible. So far, the services manage to put out all small fires at a very early stage. We hope it stays like this until the end of this year's heat season.
As for the other islands, the most serious situation is still in Rhodes, where the fire was renewed today and strong winds make it very difficult for ground forces to work. Fire fronts are also developing in the north-east of Corfu. The flames threatened several villages today enough to evacuate.
Unfortunately, as if the misfortunes so far were not enough, today there was another one, which the local media and residents of the Chania area live today. On the island of Evia (Euboea) a firefighting plane crashed in the area of Karystos. Two pilots were killed in the accident. One of them was Christos Moulas, who was born and raised in the town of Apokoronas in Crete. Family members and friends of Christos are deeply saddened. By decision of the Greek Minister of National Defense, a three-day mourning period was declared in the Greek armed forces.
