In recent days, the eyes of all Greece are on Rhodes. Raging fires constantly set off by strong winds, evacuations of tourists from hotels and the population from endangered areas is a huge price paid by this beautiful and popular island for over 40-degree heat lasting in Greece for many days. According to police estimates, about 20,000 people have been evacuated from places directly at risk of fire so far. Most of them were transported to safe places by land, and about 3,000 by sea. Unfortunately, among the victims of the element there are also more and more photos of animals that did not manage to escape from the fire.

Although the fight against the element continues all the time, unfortunately the situation is not improving. The pyrometeorological conditions forecast for tomorrow are more than alarming. In Rhodes, another very difficult day is coming for the rescue services and administrative authorities. Special patrols and helicopters monitor the situation throughout the island. The holidays of many people who chose this island for holidays are also questionable.
Unfortunately, this weekend will also go down in history as the hottest. As many as 180 weather stations in Greece recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, and as many as 87 recorded temperatures above 42 degrees. The maximum absolute temperature was recorded in Gythio, where it was 46.4 degrees Celsius.
In Crete, the situation is still under control, apart from some small local fires. Fortunately, because high temperatures do not let go here either. In some places today, over 44 degrees Celsius was recorded, and the risk of fires is still described as very high. All services that are part of the Civil Defense mechanism are placed on high alert.
As a preventive measure, bans on carrying out hot work, using barbecues and lighting any kind of fire in forests, green areas, meadows and rural areas have been introduced. Moreover, those caught violating these prohibitions were arrested. It is forbidden to move people and vehicles within Natura areas and any other sensitive areas of Crete. Some archaeological sites last weekend were not available in the afternoon. For safety reasons, the most popular gorge on the island, the Samaria Gorge, will be completely closed until next Wednesday.
Forecasted fire risk for tomorrow in Greece
The services ask for safety rules and do not underestimate the threat. Nevertheless, as the examples show, some tourists disregard the introduced bans and, contrary to common sense, set out on hiking trails. Two people died in Cretan gorges last week. And this weekend, from Saturday morning, the services searched for two tourists from Canada who went missing in the area of the White Mountains. The tourists tried to climb Gingilos but lost their bearings and asked for help. Unfortunately, they went on a trip in such conditions without adequate supplies of food and drinks.
The services located the imprudent walkers only on Sunday morning, but they still had to wait for the final action. The gentlemen deviated from the designated path and found themselves on a steep slope at an altitude of 730 meters. The difficult terrain did not make the rescue operation easier. The fire brigade helicopter was unable to take the Canadians on board due to the proximity of the slopes. It was necessary to send land units of the Fire Brigade, which finally found the men after 5.30 pm. At the moment it is known that they are alive but very exhausted.
The beaches of Crete were the most popular places for both tourists and residents looking for refreshment over the weekend. But not only ... a griffon vulture was spotted in the sea water near the village of Tris Eklissies. The animal, weakened by hunger and thirst, no longer had the strength to fly. Fortunately, he was noticed in time by people who rushed to his aid.
This is another such situation. Two days ago, another griffon vulture, exhausted by the heat, landed on a section of the New National Road in the north of the island. In this case, also accidental drivers rushed to help. Below is a very touching video of the moment when this huge wild bird lets people get very close and drinks water straight from the canister. We know that this video is not the best quality but other content is more important here.
Surely you know these great birds that can be spotted in the mountainous regions of Crete, when they glide majestically on their 2.5-meter wings ... Now, as it turns out, some of them, especially young ones, are defenseless against high temperatures. Unfortunately, the heat doesn't just affect vultures. Other, smaller birds and animals, which often look for water snakes, also die of thirst. Lack of food is not as severe for them as lack of water.
