Unfortunately, the beginning of the breeding season coincides with the most intense time in tourism, which means that sunbeds and umbrellas appear on the beaches. Unfortunately, this infrastructure makes it difficult for turtles to move around the beaches and build their nests.
Such a situation was recently observed at Damnoni Beach in Crete. According to the account of one of the witnesses, after coming ashore, the tortoise wandered between deckchairs and umbrellas for 5 hours looking for a place to lay eggs. Two people, seeing this difficult situation, helped the turtle to find a free piece of beach, but in the end the tired animal set up a nest right next to the deckchair.

This is very sad information that was posted on social media by one of the witnesses of this event. For many years, the Archelon organization dealing with the protection of Caretta caretta has been publishing information for entrepreneurs running their businesses in the immediate vicinity of beaches. These are simple recommendations, the observance of which is not expensive, and which create safe conditions for turtles at this special time. Unfortunately, as you can see, not everyone cares about the fate of these endangered animals.
What does Archelon recommend?
In fact, turtles do not set particularly high requirements and during the breeding season it is enough to follow a few simple recommendations of Archelon.
One of them is not to use heavy equipment to clean the beaches from May to October.
Also, objects that cause permanent shading should not be installed on the beach.
After sunset, beach equipment such as deckchairs and tables should be folded to provide as much space as possible for turtles.
From the beginning of the breeding season, the location of beach umbrellas should not be changed, and if they need repair, they must be driven into the sand in exactly the same places. This avoids situations where sockets that are not recognized by Archelon are damaged.
Showers should not be installed in the immediate vicinity of turtle eggs.
In addition, sunbeds should not be rinsed with water on the beach, only outside it. Excess water can cause the nest to get wet and the laid eggs to rot.
After dark, such beaches should be free from the presence of large numbers of people, and also free from excessive artificial lighting and noise emitted by loudspeakers.
Accidentally encountered turtles should not be fed or touched.
If you find traces of turtles or chicks on the beach, you should not cover them. Thanks to the traces, the Archelon research team can make a daily count.

gość PiotrWie Jeździliśmy na Kretę od 2008r, bywały lata że byliśmy w kilku kawałkach w sumie czterdzieści kilka dni ( samoloty z Wrocławia latały w piątek wieczorem tak że można było polecieć po pracy, powrotem był w poniedziałek w nocy więc za 11 dni urlopu można było być 17 dni, jak się zaplanowało z jakimś świętem to można było być 2 x 17 dni i raz 10 dni) i z roku na rok było coraz więcej ludzi - nie tylko na plażach ale ... (...)
Czy wyspa jest w stanie pomieścić 15 mln turystów, zapewne tak. Pytanie moje: skąd będzie woda?! Jak już brakuje, tama na Aposelemis sucha, gdzie ścieki popłyną, gdzie będą składowane śmieci??? Smutne, że wyspa zamienia się na globalną destynację.. rozumiem, że pieniądze są ważne ale żeby dewastować naturalne tereny np.triopetra, plakias etc... przykro
Można próbować zrozumieć ludzi, którzy z tego żyją. Można też puścić ludzi na żywioł i nie zajmować się takimi głupotami, jak ofiary śmiertelne. Samaria nie jest szlakiem w 100% bezpiecznym (który szlak jest), to głęboki wąwóz, narażony na erozyjne osunięcia skał. Poza ty, to jest region aktywny sejsmicznie i dość kapryśny pogodowo.
Myślę, że tu nie ma miejsca na ustępstwa. (...)
gość PiotrWie Dziś po raz pierwszy ( a jeździmy dużo od 2008 roku i dużo chodzimy po szlakach) widzieliśmy w Grecji ekipę przygotowującą szlak do sezonu. Nie była to co prawda zbyt duża ekipa - dwie osoby z motyką, sekatorem i niewielką piłą ręczną - ale zawsze coś - na wyspach Kanaryjskich ekipa to pierwszy z kosą spalinową a zanim kilka osób zmiatających resztki na bok.
