Blessing of sheep in the village of Asi Gonia

April 23, St. Patrick's Day George, it is worth going to the small mountain village of Asi Gonia located near Argiroupoli. On the occasion of this holiday, a special celebration of sheep blessing takes place there, which is a special celebration in this village. On that day, from early morning, the local shepherds lead their flocks to the local church of Agios Georgios. The main square of the village and the surrounding narrow streets are filled with sheep and goats. The air is filled with the characteristic smell of sheep and the melodic sound of their bells.

Animals that are not blessed on this day are considered unlucky. This holiday is attended not only by local residents, but also by foreign tourists who know about this interesting custom and are in the vicinity of this town at that time.

After blessing the flock, the shepherds begin to milk the animals and offer the milk to all the people gathered here. Traditionally, after the ceremony, shepherds lead their animals to the mountains, and a feast begins in the village that lasts until late in the evening.

This interesting tradition has been organized again since last year. Earlier, due to the pandemic, the organization of the ceremony was abandoned. This tradition has survived for many centuries and now no one knows when it was started. However, the inhabitants of Asia Gonia claim that the sheep blessing ceremony began in the first days of the foundation of this village. Until the time of the coronavirus pandemic, it was unthinkable to refrain from organizing this annual rite.

Most of the villagers are shepherds, and Saint George is considered their patron saint. Therefore, receiving the blessing of a saint is especially important for shepherds. It is also worth emphasizing that on this day shepherds also bring their sons here so that children learn this custom and so that it can be cultivated by subsequent generations of the inhabitants of Asia Gonia.

byliśmy w Asi Gonii w dniu Św. Jerzego na mszy z okazji wyruszenia stad w góry połączonej z błogosławieniem zwierząt ( owiec i kóz) w 2017 roku. Polecam.
