At the "Trade and Tourism" conference, which ended a few days ago, the results of an interesting survey conducted by the Hellenic Confederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship were presented. This study focused on foreign visitors who come to Greece from all over the world every year, and the impact of tourism on Greek trade. According to the results, Crete ranks first among the regions of Greece when it comes to the amount of daily tourist expenses, including the cost of stay.
In the case of Crete, the amount of daily spending is 238 euros , followed by the South Aegean Islands (189 euros), Corfu (178 euros) and Central Macedonia (169 euros). Last place is taken by Athens with a daily amount of 165 euros.
Tourists from the United States spend the most on holidays in Greece, with an average daily cost of EUR 232. The next place was taken by citizens of France (EUR 184), Germans and English (EUR 180) and Italians (EUR 165). It will come as no surprise to anyone that your daily spend is directly related to your income. Foreign visitors with an income of over €70,000 spend an average of €217 a day, while tourists with an income between €5,001 and €15,000 spend an average of €167 a day on holidays.
The average daily spend for a holiday in Crete also depends on the type of accommodation you choose. The cost of a hotel day in facilities offering All Inclusive is high and directly affects the calculated average. Tourists who choose hotels without this option or who buy places in boarding houses bear the costs of food. In the case of self-organized holidays, additional costs associated with transport to the destination must be added.
This means that the difference in daily expenses depending on the type of accommodation is not drastic. The average daily spend of tourists who have purchased a hotel with the All Inclusive option is 212 euros. In the case of accommodation in a hotel without AI, it is EUR 199, Airbnb - EUR 179, and in a room for rent EUR 164. People who have chosen the "other" type of accommodation incur daily expenses of 144 euros.
It is also worth mentioning that Kreta also took first place in the statement of daily expenses and shopping. In the case of this island, a tourist spends 26 euros a day on small purchases of local products or souvenirs. For comparison, in Corfu this amount is 12 euros.
When it comes to the age distribution, the most dynamic and generous age group are tourists between the ages of 35 and 44. On average, they spend €20 a day in non-grocery stores. People who chose hotels in the AI option are at a similar level. On average, they spend €21 a day on various non-food purchases. People who chose the "Other" type of accommodation leave the most money in supermarkets and local grocery stores.
Interestingly, the owners of small shops claim that the absence of tourists from Russia had a direct impact on the severe decline in their turnover. While the hotel industry somehow compensated for the lack of Russians in the 2022 season, the obvious decrease in turnover caused by the closure of the tourist market for Russian citizens was felt by shop owners. Although we all know why the Russians did not show up on Greek holidays, many shopkeepers remember with tears the good times when they came. This should come as no surprise, as they are considered by many entrepreneurs to be exceptionally generous tourists.
Souvenirs of all kinds come first (24.3%), followed by local traditional products (19.2%) and footwear and other leather goods (17.4%). Most visitors choose local shops and markets for their shopping (62%), and only 3% shop in large stores belonging to international chains.
82% of tourists are satisfied with the prices at which products are sold, and as much as 90% appreciate the variety of the offered assortment.
The fact that Crete is not an island "at once" is also evidenced by the declarations of most tourists about their readiness to visit the island again. Such a declaration is made by as many as 70.6% of foreign guests . But even those who do not plan to return to Crete will recommend the area to friends or family (95.4%) .
First of all, it is a large and diverse island, where most tourists will find something for themselves. There is a saying that Crete has everything. We are dealing here with both geographical and cultural diversity. The diverse landscape, which varies depending on the region, means that both beach lovers and those who are looking for active recreation or trekking will find their place here. Those who like to explore or party will also go crazy. History lovers will spend long hours at numerous excavations and in many museums. Also when it comes to communication on the island and the condition of the road infrastructure, there is nothing to complain about in many areas. This is another incentive to explore and move around Crete. And finally, it is impossible not to mention the excellent cuisine, which is a magnet that attracts many people.
The above data clearly show the local authorities that it is worth investing in further promotion of the local region, because thanks to this, it is possible to attract tourists with higher incomes. Not only tourism companies or the hotel industry benefit from this, but the benefits of tourists with a full wallet are also felt by shopkeepers and part of the agri-food industry.

A nie Santorini?!

Magda Fijołek No właśnie nie. Na Santorini owszem jest drogo ale turyści przebywają tam krótko i najczęściej jednak bez noclegu. A tu chodzi o sumaryczne wydatki w które wliczone jest też zakwaterowanie.
