Cretan mountains from the Sentinel-2 satellite

Cloudless weather conditions in Crete allowed last Sunday, February 19, to take satellite photos of the snow cover in Crete. As you can see, there is snow in the White Mountains and the Psiloritis massif. We would like to remind you that a significant amount of white powder appeared in Crete this winter only in early February after the passage of the Barbara low.

Images with a resolution of 10 m were taken by the Sentinel-2 satellite operating as part of the European Copernicus EU program, which systematically acquires images both over land and coastal waters. The presented photos have already been processed by Climatebook.

In the photo below you can see the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) with the characteristic Omalos plateau. When you click on it, the photo will open in larger sizes.

The second photo shows the central region of Crete with the highest mountain of Crete - Psiloritis. It is worth noting that snow is found only in the higher parts of the mountains. Even the villages on the outskirts of the Anogia and Zoniania mountain ranges are currently without snow.

Jak na drugą połowę lutego to dość mało śniegu - ciekawe w jakim tempie będzie topniał. W 2018 byliśmy na przełomie marca i kwietnia było mniej, ale wtedy widzieliśmy tylko z daleka, w 2017 byliśmy na Nidzie 18 kwietnia to nie była wcale śniegu - a teraz leży go bardzo dużo. Wtedy 20 kwietnia próbowaliśmy dojechać do Lakkos Mygreou to się nie dało - drogę zatarasowała spora zaspa. Jak nie powstanie na wierzchu Firn to do maja powinno się stopić nawet wysoko.
