Although we are still half a year away from the holidays, the tourist industry is already trying to forecast the course of this year's tourist season based on the bookings. The first three months of the new year are the beginning of the sales period for this year's holiday stays.
Although at the moment the pace of sales is slow, the level of bookings is satisfactory. What is already noticeable is the high dynamics of bookings made from France and Great Britain. Babis Birlirakis, vice-president of the Rethymnon Hoteliers' Association, points out that the number of reservations coming from Europe so far is estimated at around 10-15%, which is comparable to the levels recorded in the so-called normal years 2018-2019. By March, approximately 35% of all tourist bookings for a given season are usually registered. The number of early bookings finalized during this period is a kind of sample of how the current season will develop. Another important event in the industry is the travel fair in Berlin, organized at the beginning of March. Traditionally, after their completion, the dynamics of bookings from Germany, Austria and Switzerland increases.
This year, industry managers describe this moment as a kind of critical point that will allow them to assess to what extent the rising cost of living will affect the attitude of Europeans to travel this year. And there were a lot of problems and raises. The energy crisis, which is a big blow for all citizens of the old continent, who after the winter will have to face much higher bills to pay.
It is also worth mentioning that an increase in the prices of air tickets is also expected in the near future. At the moment, however, it is not known for sure whether and how high the prices for flights will soar. However, one has to take into account that this increase will be added to the cost of hotel packages, which have already increased by 8-10%. If ticket prices for flights increase significantly, it can be expected that tourists will choose places to which the flight is shorter, and therefore cheaper.
An additional factor depleting household budgets is inflation. In this situation, it is reasonable to ask to what extent the current economic conditions will limit travel and how many people will be forced to stay in their own country.
These are the key factors that, according to entrepreneurs operating in the tourism sector, will significantly affect this year's demand. At the moment, however, optimism and faith prevail that higher electricity bills and rising costs will not change holiday plans, and the need for holidays will prevail. It is estimated that perhaps the number of arrivals will be lower than in 2022, but if results comparable to those from 2019 are achieved, this year's season will be considered successful.
At the same time, entrepreneurs pay attention to the constantly expanding hotel base, which, even with stable arrivals, may make it difficult for individual hotels to achieve high occupancy.
We must also remember the other side of this coin. The problem of high food or electricity prices affects not only customers, but also the entire hotel industry. Some hotel owners are trying to invest in alternative forms of generating their own electricity in order to reduce operating costs.
Another huge problem that the hotel industry will face this year will be staff shortages. According to current figures, there is a shortage of 60,000 workers in the hotel industry throughout Greece. What's worse, at the moment finding the right solutions is not easy. The problem of staff shortages is obviously not new, but it has been significantly deepened by the specific situation caused by the pandemic. It is worth recalling the long period of the ban on free travel and, consequently, the closure of hotels in Greece for many months. The short seasons we had in 2020 and 2021 were also a big problem. All these factors had a very negative impact on the stability of employment in the tourism industry. Some people who could not afford to be without a stable income for a long time were forced to retrain to another profession.
Those who have found employment elsewhere are unlikely to return to work in hotels. Bringing employees from the so-called third countries, can only improve the situation to a small extent. To ensure high quality of service, hotel staff must be trained and have the knowledge to meet the requirements of modern hotels.
Many hotels are already trying to attract new employees by organizing events such as Career Days. There is also hope of offering hotel jobs to young Europeans who are looking for this type of job for their holidays. However, in order to attract new employees for longer, hotels must offer better employment conditions, which in the era of seeking savings can be very difficult to implement.

Gosia Gosia K-z taka jest prawda jak pani pisze, samo zawsze szukamy długo fajnych ofert żeby nie przepłacać w hotelach dla dorosłych zazwyczaj i z roku na rok ceny są mega większe a standard jaki oferują to jest dramat… tym bardziej ze teraz Grecja się zrobiła nr1 dla wczasowiczów, chociaż mógłbym się mylić skoro Turcja była na dowód w niższych cenach a o komforcie to już nawet wspominać nie trzeba

CRETE - Kreta niestety hotele który trzymają jakiś standard, oferty na 2023 mają ceny kosmos. Osobiście polecam organizację na własną rękę. Połowa kasy do wydania a i przygoda fajniejsza. My na takich wyjazdach czujemy się jak lokalsi. Robimy zakupy, gotujemy, wynosimy śmieci, sprzątamy, taka namiastka mieszkania w danej lokalizacji haha. Wszystko zależy co komu pasuje. Ostatnie 2 wyjazdy były właśnie tak organizowane. I patrząc na oferty z BP na 2023 to tylko takie nam pozostają. Dla przykładu, 15 dni dla 6 osób w tym 2 dzieci, hotel 4*, 36 tys oferta BP kosmos po prostu. Za taki sam wyjazd w 2021 płaciliśmy 7.5 tys za dwie osoby, a w 2022 lekko ponad 8 tys. Ten sam hotel ta sama data, to samo BP i nadchodzi rok 2023 i cena już wynosi 11 tys. Po częściej rozumiem hotelarzy, patrząc na ceny energii elektrycznej itp, ceny z lat poprzednich utrzymać się nie da, to nie do końca ich wina, ale oferty zaczynają wykracza poza zdolności normalnych ludzi.

Mar Ko Faktycznie ceny w BP są sporo wyższe niż w poprzednim sezonie i organizacja wyjazdu dla 4-osobowej rodziny staje się mocno kosztownym przedsięwzięciem zwłaszcza w nieco lepszych hotelach. Dodatkowo oprócz cen energii w Grecji w górę poszły też ceny żywności, co oczywiście przekłada się na wyższe ceny w hotelach. Samodzielna organizacja wyjazdu będzie tańsza i my zawsze namawiamy do tej opcji, ale rozumiemy też że nie każdy chce takiej formy wakacji bo do ogarnięcia jest w sumie sporo rzeczy.

Gosia Gosia K-z jakie biuro? Niestety Greckie oferty czasem są poniżej krytyki. Dlatego wybieram najtańsze oferty i wszystko organizuje i uzupełniam sobie braki prywatnie. Ich formuła ALL to dramat. DLatego lepiej zorganizować sobie bardzo tani pobyt w cenie lotu i na miejscu kosztować życia, robiąc zakupy samodzielnie i korzystać z ofert sklepów, restauracji, tawern
