Protohronia, or New Year's Eve in Crete

On yesterday's special evening, some of the inhabitants of the largest Cretan cities chose New Year's Eve parties under the cloud to welcome the New Year.

The inhabitants of Chania started the fun at 10:00 pm at the Municipal Garden Clock, where for the first time in two years a New Year's Eve party and a concert were organized. At midnight, the sky over Chania was lit up by fireworks, and the gathered people could also watch the light show.

In Heraklion, city residents and tourists spending time here said goodbye to 2022 at Eleftheria Square at an event organized by the city authorities. The last seconds before midnight were counted by the mayor of the city, Vassilis Lambrinos, who offered New Year's wishes to people having fun. The New Year's Eve party was also attended by musicians from the City Philharmonic, who played a concert. It is worth mentioning that sweet bougatsa is the most popular snack during outdoor parties.

On January 1 of the new year, there is also a nice tradition of providing information on Cretan portals about the first child born in Crete in the New Year. In 2023, just one minute after midnight, a new Cretan was born in a hospital in Heraklion.
