The end of the year is a good time to summarize the past months. Although you will have to wait for the data for the entire year 2022, you can already say something about the tourist season in Greece, which ended a few weeks ago. According to the Bank of Greece, over the ten months of this year, tourism revenues increased by 70.4% compared to the same period in 2021 and amounted to €17.145 billion.
Although, of course, an increase of over 70% seems impressive, it should be remembered that 2021 was a very specific year. Throughout that season, there were various restrictions related to the pandemic, which did not encourage travel. A meaningful comparison can basically only be made to 2019, which was the last year before the pandemic. It is also worth mentioning that it was also a record year both in terms of the number of foreign tourists who visited Greece and in terms of revenues generated from tourism.
Therefore, if we compare the results obtained in 2022 with those obtained in 2019 in the same period from January to October, it turns out that travel receipts decreased by 2.6%, but the travel volume indicator increased by 11%. In addition, an over 10% increase in travel expenses was also recorded.
The total number of tourists who visited Greece in the first ten months of this year exceeded 26.4 million. For comparison, in the same time period in 2021, 13.7 million tourists came to Greece. In the year ending, 16.3 million travelers from the European Union came to Greece, while tourist traffic from outside the EU amounted to 10.1 million travelers.
Satisfied customers
Additional optimistic data also appear in the results of reports examining the aspect of satisfaction of foreign visitors who visited Greece. In the ranking of In the overall satisfaction index, Greece ranked first with a score of 86.8%. Croatia and Cyprus (84.9%) came second, followed by Spain (84.1%), Italy (83.1%) and Turkey (80.5%).
These figures were calculated by ReviewPro, a company that specializes in measuring hotel reputation. They were developed on the basis of customer reviews of Greek hotels, which were compared with opinions on hotels located in competing destinations. Opinions were collected from sources such as travel agency websites, all kinds of social media and websites collecting reviews about hotels and services provided. Indicators over 80% indicate positive experiences and can be used to assess the evolution of the quality of services provided.
