Weather anomalies just before Christmas

Here comes….heat! After a few days of weather deterioration brought by the Gaia front, the inhabitants of Crete can prepare for the return of summer. Temperatures across Greece are expected to rise from next Wednesday. However, the expected maximum temperatures will be quite a surprise. In Crete, they will exceed even 25-26 degrees, which will allow you to remember the summer aura for a moment. The expected mild wind combined with higher temperatures will certainly draw lovers of spending free time by the sea out of their homes. Higher temperatures will also melt the first snows that have already fallen not only in Crete but also in other regions.

Costas Lagouvardos, director of research at the National Observatory in Athens, characterizes the expected temperatures as very large deviations from the norm, amounting to as much as 10 degrees in the case of Crete. The average temperature on the island in December is 16.5 degrees. Analyzing the temperatures recorded over the last few decades, Lagouvardos emphasizes that the summer aura around Christmas is quite unusual and rare.

In recent decades, the inhabitants of Crete have had to deal with such high temperatures three times. The last time it happened was in 2010 in the first decade of December when 29 degrees were recorded in Chania. The previous heat record was set between December 22 and 24, 1996. At that time, the recorded heat record in Chania was 28 degrees, and between December 20 and 23, 1963.
