This weekend will be remembered by the inhabitants of Crete for a long time. The expected worsening of the weather brought with it an unexpected amount of rainfall, which not only caused massive damage to the island but also deaths.
The barometric low, moving over Crete, was accompanied by enormous rainfall. In a very short time, eastern Crete lost as much water as 1/3 of the total rainfall recorded throughout the year. In the Heraklion and Lassithi regions, this extreme amount of rainfall quickly turned into flash floods. The fire brigade received a total of 453 reports within one hour.

Until 20 o'clock on Saturday, the highest rainfall was recorded in Agios Nikolaos (139 mm), Asi Gonia (119), Moni Toplou (98), Heraklion-Anatolika (89), Spili (79), Kakopetros (75), Samaria-Xyloskalo (62 ). There is no station in Sitia on the list because it was damaged after registering the first 120 mm of rain.
Already from Thursday, the services issued alerts to residents about the impending sudden deterioration of the weather. A message was sent to residents of several areas to avoid travel. The services were in a state of increased readiness to cope with the effects of violent phenomena.
Despite this, such intense rainfall surprised both the inhabitants, the authorities and the services themselves. According to Efthymios Lekkas, a natural disaster management expert, rainfall was expected to be 30 mm of water, but in half an hour it fell by 130 mm. Such a large amount of water flowed into the sea like a tsunami wave, which carried away everything that happened on its way. According to Efthymios Lekkas, such a violent flood should be attributed to the climate crisis, which brings violent fires and high temperatures in summer, and huge amounts of rainfall in autumn.
The town of Agia Pelagia, where there is huge damage to shops, vehicles and property of the inhabitants, was very seriously damaged by the flash flood. Many vehicles are still drifting in the water and flowing into the sea. Some property and shop owners are now trying to remove mud and other materials that have been blown in by the rushing water.
Strong storms and heavy rains also caused serious problems in Lygaria, Paleokastro and Karterso and in Sitia. The city beach in Sitia was completely flooded and many vehicles were washed away by the water. The images accompanying the inhabitants are flooded streets, houses and shops, cars drifting in the water and landslides on the roads. People are trying to save their belongings and real estate.
There is only one word for what is happening in the regions affected by the devastation: apocalypse. It is impossible to describe these pictures, we can only show you pictures that say more than words.

Destruction in Sitia:
Water flowing through the streets of Sitia:
Unfortunately, this disaster also took its toll. In the area of Agia Pelagia, swollen water carried away two people driving the car. Unfortunately, these people had no chance of survival. The man managed to contact the family and say that the water is already reaching the windows, after which the conversation was interrupted. The dead man was found yesterday by the fire department. We will add that it was Kostas Vergakis, one of the best photographers in Heraklion. The women who were traveling with him were searched for hours. Her body was only noticed today in the sea, about 100 meters from the shore. Due to the high waves, they were fished out a few hours later. The end of this tragedy took place literally in front of the government delegation that has been in Crete since this morning.
In the Chania area, heavy rain has left its mark mainly on the Akrotiri peninsula, and especially in Stavros. Many residents were trapped in their homes. From the morning the fire brigade tries to pump water out of the streets and property.
Needless to say, all ravines and trails are banned this weekend.
Bad weather and violent phenomena have not only affected Crete. Precipitation also occurs in the Dodecanese region, including the islands of Karpathos and Kasos.

Dziś wróciłam z Kato Gouves do Polski.

Such a tragedy for a beautiful place
Jesień to pora deszczowa w klimacie śródziemnomorskim
