The municipality of Chania is just starting a project to collect materials for an interesting project that will diversify the tourist map of the city and allow visitors to learn more about its history. This project first involves photographing places of historical and cultural importance, among others. Then, on the basis of these photos, the physical and digital marking of 115 monuments and points of interest located in the city of Chania. The material collected will allow the creation of thematic routes such as Monuments of History, Fortifications, Places of Culture and Events, Architecture and Coast-Nature.
The points that will be captured digitally include the City Agora, the City Garden, the Barracks, the Courthouse, Firkas Fortress, the house and tomb of Prime Minister Elftherios Venizelos and his son Sophocles, museums, historical buildings, minarets, and excavations. Among these key places and monuments, of course, there will be the most recognizable symbol of the city, the Faros lighthouse.
Each of the places will be marked with special barcodes. Thanks to a dedicated application, visitors will be able to scan these codes and then read detailed information on their smartphones and see what these places looked like in the past. To make everything possible, the collection of archival photos from private collectors as well as from the municipal archive or the City Library is already in progress.
In addition, there are also plans to create an extensive photo album, which will collect old and hard-to-reach photographs.
The implementation of this interesting and necessary project will be financed from EU funds.
