An interesting atmospheric phenomenon took place today on almost the entire north-eastern coast of Crete. Many inhabitants of the vicinity of Heraklion (and not only) who went for a walk along the coast had the opportunity to see a strange phenomenon today. An unusual fog was rising just above the horizon, completely obscuring the view.
This particularly worried the inhabitants of Plaka. Some people, seeing such a strange oblong cloud, concluded that it was the smoke that was caused by the fire in Spinalonga.
Meteorologists explained, however, that the phenomenon witnessed by the inhabitants of Crete today is the so-called evaporation fog. Usually it hovers over water reservoirs or wetlands. It is formed when the warm water in the sea evaporates and ends up in the cool air. This phenomenon is also known as sea smoke.
Below are some videos recorded today where you will see this strange fog.
