Until the beginning of the nineties, this place was known only to a few tourists and local residents. During this period, there was a rather uncomfortable gravel road leading to the beach. This rather limited availability was soon used by nudists who found a perfect hiding place here. Currently, getting to Souda is not the slightest problem, as an asphalt road has been connected here for quite a long time. and a footpath between Plakias and Souda has recently been built for pedestrians, although today the place is definitely more popular with ordinary tourists, you will still find many naturists here.
Souda is at the end of the gorge with the Finikas River flowing at its bottom. This small stream, fed by mountain streams, is full of water all year round. Good water availability makes this valley green even at the peak of the holiday season. In several places along Finikas you can see the groves of Cretan palm trees Phoenix theophrastii, which you may know from places such as Vai and Preveli. Souda is one of the most important reserves where this very rare species occurs.
