Another fire in the area of Rethymno Prefecture

Today again, another day in a row on the fire risk map, all of Crete is filled with orange. It is the fourth, or almost the highest degree of threat. This situation has been going on for five days. The fact that the threat is real is remembered by the phone that sounds the ominous sound of a terrible siren and tears us out of the afternoon siesta. A message appears on the screen that another fire has reappeared in the area. This time the Saktouria area is on fire. Immediate evacuation to Agios Pavlos is recommended for everyone in this area. And there is a thought in our heads: we were there yesterday. This is why alerts were sent to our calls. Yesterday we walked a dozen or so kilometers in this area on our own feet. Today there is a fire there again: /

In the last few days, it is another large fire that occurred in the municipality of Agios Vasilliou. Three days ago we wrote you about earlier ones, which took place, among others, in the vicinity of Krya Vrysi, Orne, Melampes and Rodakino. Professional firefighters and volunteer services now have their hands full. We can only guess how extremely difficult it is to extinguish fires in the weather that prevails in this part of Crete. The force of the wind now blowing in these regions of Crete is so great that yesterday we had problems traversing the hiking trails. The gusts made it difficult to catch another breath, let alone continue the journey. The wind force is estimated at 10 on the Beaufort scale, and the gusts can reach speeds of up to 100 km / h.

And finally, we also have a small request to everyone - follow the prohibitions on entering forest areas in cases of high fire risk. Unfortunately, our observations from Preveli Beach are such that many people relaxing there have no information boards at the entrance to the local palm forest. They clearly state that due to the high risk of fire, entry to this forest is forbidden.
