Many archeology enthusiasts (including us!) Were waiting for this day. Tomorrow at 8:00 am, the new building of the Archaeological Museum of Chania will finally be opened to visitors. April 16 is almost a symbolic day for this event, as the previous Archaeological Museum was opened in this city 60 years ago.
The new museum, as befits the Greek "tradition", begins its activity with a significant delay in its completion. The original plans assumed that the works would be completed in 2015, but the deadline for launching the new headquarters was postponed many times.

The first guests of the new Museum will be the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and the Minister of Culture, who will visit it later tonight. The official inauguration of the Museum will most likely take place in June. Now it has not been decided to openly open due to the restrictions related to the coronavirus and the war in Ukraine that are still in force. However, the local authorities decided that due to the increasingly developing tourist season and the completion of all finishing works in the building, they should be made available to visitors as soon as possible. Thanks to the earlier opening of the museum, the inhabitants of Crete will have a chance to visit this place before the high tourist season begins on the island.
The new headquarters of the Archaeological Museum was designed by the world-famous architect Theofanis Bobotis. The 6,000 m2 building was erected in the Chalepa district. It will house 3,500,000 archaeological artifacts found in several places in Chania during the last 50 years. Due to the limited space of the previous building, which previously housed the Museum, some of the exhibits could not be presented to visitors. Now more than 1,000 finds have been exhibited to the public for the first time.
The new exhibition of the museum presents the finds chronologically and focuses on five thematic axes. The first concerns the history of the museum in Chania itself, the second introduces new exhibits and presents the results of the latest archaeological research in Crete. The next two axes are the most extensive as they represent the culture of the region from the prehistoric period to the late Roman period. Within them, individual topics related to discoveries in caves, everyday life of the Minoans, the theme of the temple of Asclepius of Lissos and Kydonia are developed. The fifth thematic axis presents items donated by private persons.
It is worth recalling that from September 13, 2020, the former Archaeological Museum located in the former Venetian church of Agios Fragiskos located in the old part of the city no longer functioned in Chania. They were closed to move the museum's collections to the new building. The current modern headquarters will certainly become a new tourist attraction of the city, which will attract crowds of people during the season. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Museum is also to organize temporary exhibitions, carry out educational programs and various cultural events emphasizing the historical wealth of the city.
