During the first weeks of this year, the forecasts for the upcoming tourist season in Greece were very optimistic. Everything indicated that the tourism industry, after two years of the pandemic, would finally see a better season and start to recover at least partially. Unfortunately, however, the war unleashed by Russia changes these predictions and puts the coming season into question. The uncertainty of tomorrow caused by the conflict and the loss of tourists from Ukraine and Russia are only one element of the puzzle that paints this tourist season in dark colors. Inflation and drastic increases in energy prices are other negative aspects strongly affecting the tourism industry.
The Russian attack on Ukraine, acts of genocide and bombing of Ukrainian cities took away the sense of security of the inhabitants of a large part of Europe. The uncertainty that has been with us for over two weeks means that the dynamics of bookings that flowed into Greece has changed. This is especially true for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Some of the people who did not manage to book their trips earlier, postponed the decision to vacation for a further future. The losses caused by the lack of tourists from Ukraine and Russia, the tourist industry in Greece will probably want to compensate for tourists from other countries, at least partially. However, these hotels, which so far "specialized" only in tourists from Ukraine and Russia, are now facing quite a problem because they have just lost their only customers.
What all hotels and guesthouses will feel, however, are the direct consequences of inflation. Rising food prices and energy price hikes are causing real increases in hotel operating costs. It is worth mentioning that in just a few days the price of energy increased by 55%. Such a large increase caused great concern among Greek hoteliers. In summer, hotel facilities in Greece use enormous amounts of energy primarily to power air conditioners. Already now, with current electricity prices, hotel owners can expect electricity bills to triple. At the same time, their hands are often tied because the rising cost of living cannot be compensated by them by raising prices for their services. This applies in particular to those hoteliers who have signed long-term contracts with travel agencies and agencies or have received a payment or even an advance payment. Many months ago, when these contracts were signed, no one predicted the galloping food and energy prices, as well as the Russian invasion.
In the Rethymno region alone, 60% of bookings are currently closed. So there is still 40% of unsold offers left. It seems that the easiest solution at this point is to raise the prices of vacations with still free offers. Unfortunately, such a move may mean that tourists who have not yet made a decision about choosing a holiday destination, will not come to Greece at all. Inflation, which actually reduces the incomes of Europeans, may ultimately cause many people to completely give up traveling abroad this year.
There is also the issue of transport prices. Will the more expensive fuel also cause significant increases in airline ticket prices? However, here is a light at the end of the tunnel as the carriers still have fuel stockpiled during the pandemic. Typically, these companies buy fuel in advance and enter into contracts that guarantee the sale at certain prices. Perhaps, thanks to the accumulated fuel reserves, the airlines will not treat us with increases in ticket prices, at least in the near future.
Crete, which is mentioned as the most popular destination in Greece, will start to receive its first guests in the first week of April. However, they will be mainly tourists from France, Germany and England. These are markets that are not directly affected by the events in Ukraine. Bookings from these countries remain stable and the mood among tourists from these countries is optimistic. From the beginning of next month, from 2,000 to 3,000 tourists a day will come to Crete every day. It is estimated that around 30% of hotels will open in Heraklion Prefecture during this time. However, it is difficult to predict now how the future of this year's season will unfold. There are too many unknowns for one scenario or another to be drawn. Rather, however, it is almost certain that it will not be an easy year for the Greek tourism industry again.

Mariusz Bart Pozostałe elementy są wymienione w artykule: inflacja, wzrost cen paliw. Ani słowa o covidzie. Prognozy były już optymistyczne i to nie covid je zmienił w tym roku. Także bez nadinterpretacji.

CRETE - Kreta zgodzę się, że nie ma słowa o covidzie, ale.. za długo żyję na ziemi, aby nie zauważyć, że pobudzać rynek można na różne sposoby.. jednym z nich jest koniec szopki z C19.

CRETE - Kreta to skoro "atuty" demolują im gospodarczo turystykę [ a na to jest zdecydowanie więcej dowodów niż tych "badań o protokołach sanitarnych" (cokolwiek to jest) ] i się z nimi godzą to niech nie marudzą, że im źle.. bo nie da się jednocześnie zjeść cukierka i mieć cukierka..

Mariusz Bart Nie lubię się powtarzać ale zrobię wyjątek. To nie covid w tym roku popsuł prognozy. W 2022 miało nastąpić odbicie rynku turystycznego. Wszystko się spieprzyło z chwilą napaści na Ukrainę i konsekeencji jakie wywołała wojna. No ale każdy wierzy w to co chce.

Wkacje 2022
Chętnie odwiedziłbym bym znowu Kretę. Podróżowaliśmy praktycznie rok w rok. Uwielbiam tą wyspę ale nie za cenę upodlenia. (testy, szczypawki czyt. preparat medyczny). Jak zakończą covidiozę to kupuję bilety.
