Today we will also stay on the topic of predictions for the upcoming tourist season. A study conducted by Accor, a leading global group operating in the tourism market, under which a number of travel agencies, hotels and restaurants is organized, may help in forecasting holiday preferences of destinations. The results of the surveys indicate Greece as the third most desirable destination in Europe in 2022 .
6,000 people from five key tourism markets: Great Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland and Russia participated in the study. The respondents were asked about their preferences and desires regarding this year's travels. It is optimistic that, despite the continuing difficulties introduced by the pandemic, as many as 80% of people plan to travel this year.
Slightly more than half (55%) of the respondents do not plan to travel outside of Europe this year. The three most desirable destinations in Europe are Italy (36%), Spain (30%) and Greece (28%). The respondents justify their choices with a short flight time, warm climate, local cuisine, fashion and culture of a given country. Interestingly, 10% of respondents also indicated Poland as the country they want to visit.
If we take a closer look at global travel destinations, the three most frequently indicated countries are Italy (23%), Spain (21%) and Greece (18%). 13% of the respondents plan to travel to North America, and 11% to the countries of Southeast Asia.
Accor's survey also reveals great optimism in travel planning. 30% of people are already actively planning and booking trips for the first half of this year, 50% for the second half, and almost every fifth person is already booking trips for 2023. Planning optimism doubled earlier this year. At the end of 2021, only 14% of travelers had vacation plans, but at the beginning of 2022 this number has doubled and is constantly growing.
It also looks like travelers will want to make up for the pandemic and travel restrictions. They provide for larger budgets for travel and more frequent trips in the near future. 14% of Europeans plan to treat themselves to luxury holidays and journeys of a lifetime in 2022 to compensate for the last two difficult years.
In 2022, people participating in this study intend to spend on average up to 39% more than in 2019, and also to travel an average of four times a year. 33% of people dream of a lazy beach vacation, more than a quarter of respondents plan trips to cities.
Flexible booking and clear sanitary standards are at the top of the must-have list in 2022. More and more important in the holiday elections is the role of modern technology, such as: the possibility of contactless payments (23%), the use of advanced hotel technology (17%) or a cashless method of giving tips (10%).
Interestingly, 17% of the surveyed people openly say that they want limited contacts with other vacationers during the holidays. The same number of people want to reduce air travel. Sustainable development and the impact of the chosen means of transport are important for 87% of respondents. And the slogan of conscious traveling is becoming a trend for this year.
