On Thursday, we wrote about the deteriorating weather in Crete, for which the Diomidis front is responsible. Snowfall in the higher parts of the island caused considerable difficulties. Only this morning, the road connecting Imbros with the high-lying villages of Kallikratis and Asfendou has been opened. The road has been impassable for the last two days due to the large amount of snow.

Early yesterday morning the fire department brought in some men who drove in cars to the Katharos plateau above the village of Kritsa on Thursday night. However, due to heavy snowfall, they lost their orientation in the field. Some vehicles managed to return to Ierapetra, but the cars of the six drivers got stuck on roads covered with a meter of snow. Only in the morning the men called 112 for help.

Only this morning, the road connecting Imbros with the high-lying villages of Kallikratis and Asfendou has been opened. The road was impassable for the last two days due to the large amount of snow, which in some places reached a height of 3 meters. The teams with snow removal equipment started work here on Thursday night, and only finished it today. Although the inhabitants of these villages are used to harsh weather conditions, many people in the area keep their animals, which they could not reach with food. An additional difficulty for the inhabitants of this area was the cut off electricity. However, the repair of this failure could only be started after the access road was cleared.
Taking advantage of the good weather today, many drivers went to the mountain regions of Crete to enjoy the winter landscape. Some of them chose the Omalos plateau as their destination. Unfortunately, many cars were immobilized on the icy road, which caused great difficulties for other moving vehicles.
Other inhabitants of Crete, to feel the winter climate, went to the village of Anogia or the Lassithi plateau. In this area, systematically operating plows kept the roads accessible all the time, but local authorities urged drivers not to overestimate their potential and avoid unknown areas if they do not want to get stuck in the snow. If someone has to go to the mountains, he should absolutely take snow chains with him.
