Diomidis spoils the weather in Crete

For several dozen hours, Crete has been under the influence of Diomidis - an atmospheric front that brought extremely bad weather. The gusty wind that accompanies this weather breakdown reached the strength of even 9 on the Beaufort scale. Such bad weather immobilized ships in harbors. Fortunately, however, the situation is soon to improve so that it will be possible to restore regular shipping between Crete and the port of Piraeus.

Yesterday's media circulated photos and film reports from Rethymno, where the sea was breaking into the land near the local port. It is true that this is not an unusual situation, because with rainfall and strong winds it repeats itself every year. Nevertheless, for safety reasons, the streets in the vicinity of the port have been closed to cars.

It was also spectacular in the port of Chania, where the waves broke into the quay of the Venetian Harbor. You can see some other photos here .

The Kotsifou Gorge was also closed today because of the rocky landslides at night. Kotsifou is one of the most important picturesque gorges in the Plakias area.

Bad weather in many of the higher altitudes brought mainly snowfall. It sprinkled the Lassithi Plateau and surrounding villages. The main concern of the authorities is the maintenance of open roads, but some roads, especially south of Lassithi, had to be closed. Snow-covered mountain roads become especially dangerous at night and in the morning, when frost becomes an additional obstacle. Below is a video recorded by the mayor of this region.

Much stronger snowfall occurred in mountain villages located in the higher parts of the mountains in the area of the Psiloritis massif and the Omalos plateau. And it is here that the lowest air temperatures were recorded.

Some, however, decided to use the windy weather for sports. In Chania, the kitesurfer decided to tame the wind and waves.
