The Chania Forest Directorate today announced the definitive closure of the Samaria National Park. It was originally assumed that the gorge would remain open until the end of October. However, due to the intense and dangerous weather phenomena forecast for the next two days, it was decided to close the trail a bit earlier. It is therefore the final closure of Samaria for 2021.
The Chania Forest Directorate has also announced that it will soon publish a report on the Park's 60 years of operation. As soon as it appears, we will be happy to look at the numbers provided.
Certainly, the statistics summarizing this ending season will also be interesting. This year, Samaria was made available in its entirety very late, only from June 12. Later, which makes this season unique, it was excluded from tourist traffic from July 31 for about 3 weeks due to extreme heat and high fire risk. Certainly, the inhabitants of Agia Roumeli, a town that tourists reach after crossing the gorge, will struggle with the negative economic effects of these decisions in the coming months.
