Hot autumn in Greek tourism

Everything indicates that this tourist season will be written as a different one due to its significant extension. Usually, October was a month that was already called the low season, and the number of tourists vacationing in Crete during this period decreased drastically with each week. In 2021, however, after the late start of the season, the interest of tourists in trips to Crete shifted to the autumn months. This makes this year's October one of the best in the last decade.

High hotel occupancy

The average hotel occupancy in September and October in Crete remains at the level of 65%, but in some cases it reaches even 80-90%. While most of the hotel units will close at the end of this month, some will remain open for much of November. All this to accommodate tourists who are just now coming on their vacation. But what's more surprising is that some hotels only plan to close down by the end of November.

Extending the season into the fall months is of course a big profit for entrepreneurs, but it must be remembered that in Greece tourism started this year only in mid-May. According to estimates, the season in Crete and the Rethymno region will end at 60-65% of the turnover achieved in 2019. This means that the original estimates made for this season are significantly exceeded. For comparison, the level of 55% has so far been achieved in the whole of Greece.

In recent years, autumn tourism has not been the domain of Greece. At this time of the year, tourists chose rather Egypt, Tunisia or Turkey. However, as shown by the data this year, the choice of Greek destinations in the autumn months was primarily determined by compliance with the implemented health procedures.

They are still flying

Undoubtedly, extending the season is also possible thanks to maintaining charter connections. Mass charter flights will surely continue at least for the first decade of November, and their number will decrease later.

In October, only in Germany alone, bookings were higher than in the corresponding month in 2019, i.e. before the pandemic. This unusually high demand has forced the tour operator Alltours to add an additional 65 charter flights to those previously scheduled. Thanks to them, 20,000 additional tourists will fly to Crete and the immensely popular Mallorca.

In addition to German tourists present throughout the season, this year also Poles and the French are in the lead. The Scandinavians were less present in Crete this year than usual. Interestingly, October saw an increase in the number of British tourists who had not traveled here in the previous months.

Good predictions for 2022

Tourist entrepreneurs are also very optimistic about next year's season. The interest in bookings for 2022 is high, and in addition, a certain group of customers are those who postponed their bookings for next year due to the pandemic. In next year's estimates, tourism entrepreneurs aim to achieve 75% of arrivals from 2019.

City-Break Heraklion, a new campaign by the Ministry of Tourism, will also generate additional interest in vacationing in Crete. In addition, there is also a plan to promote more tourist destinations less associated with Greece. It is about various attractions located in the mountains and shelters. The campaign also aims to support special tourism, such as sports, gastronomic or wine tourism. Recently, there have also been talks about starting religious tourism.

Taaak! Od kilku lat jezdze na wakacje w pazdzierniku do Grecji i bylo zawsze juz pusto. Takich tlumów turystycznych jak w tym roku dawno nie widzialam w pazdzierniku.

Trochę z autopsji, trochę jako "świadek ze słyszenia" mogę potwierdzić. 3 lata temu hotel (Petra Mare) był na pocz. października bardzo zapełniony, ale Ierapetra pustawa. Teraz czytałem opinie o hotelu który chciałem wybrać na 2022 i właśnie widzę po pierwsze dużo opinii, po drugie że komuś bardzo tłum i hałas przeszkadzał :)
