Yesterday we informed you about the earthquake that was experienced by the inhabitants of the eastern tip of Crete. As a result, the small church of Agios Nikoloas in Xerokambos almost completely collapsed. Today you can see it in more detail in a video shot from a drone by Nikos Sarantos.
From today's information provided to Giannis Plakiotakias, the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, who is associated with this region of Crete, it appears that Thanassis Martinos undertook the complete reconstruction of this historic church. Martinos is the founder of Eastmed, which manages and operates a fleet of 73 tankers, bulk carriers and container ships. He is also known for his social activities.
The damage caused by yesterday's earthquake in the Sitia area was also assessed today. An interesting find was also made by the way. In one of the dilapidated houses in Xerokambos, police discovered a hash plantation of 82 cannabis seedlings up to one meter high. The owner of this house has therefore much more trouble than destroying the building.
At the same time, the seismologist Gerasimos Chouliaras was worried today about the incorrect scale of the aftershocks. Since yesterday, only 10 low intensity quakes have been recorded in the area of yesterday's earthquake. Chouliaras said this was not what he expected, as the aftershocks should be much stronger than those that have been recorded so far. The seismologist believes that yesterday's strong quake (6.3) should be followed by another with a strength of not less than 4.5 on the Richter scale. However, this did not happen, which allows him to assume that all the tension has not been released.
At the same time, Chouliaras said that only because the epicenter of yesterday's earthquake was near the sea, very large damage was avoided on land: "If there were 6.3 on land, I don't want to think about what could have happened."
