As you probably know, the Samaria Gorge was closed on July 31 due to a very high fire hazard caused by a prolonged heat wave. It was reported last Thursday that the shutdown of Samaria is being extended until August 20. This decision caused a harsh reaction from the inhabitants of the village of Agia Roumeli, which is located at the end of the path leading through the gorge.
Initially, they protested against the prolonged closure of Samaria, as this popular route is a livelihood for the villagers. Meanwhile, in the middle of the peak of popularity, Samaria has been out of traffic for more than two weeks. To this end, they sent an official letter to the deputy minister of civil protection, Nikos Hardalias. They argue that the ravine route is constantly monitored by foresters and firefighters, and the risk of fire in this area is low. Residents of the village suffer financial losses for another year in a row, which means that their enterprises are in danger of collapse. The inhabitants of the village were also supported by the mayor of the Platanias commune, who emphasized that the current weather conditions do not justify the prolonged ban on entry to this national park, and in addition, this decision creates a negative image of the region.
What is most interesting about this story is left for the end. Well, the inhabitants of Agia Roumeli arbitrarily opened the southern entrance to the gorge and provided tourists with two kilometers of the route to the Iron Gate. In addition, during this time, tourists can enter the Park without paying admission tickets. They posted information about it on the official profile of Agia Roumeli Sfakia .
