Today's media has electrified information about a fire that occurred in the area of Ammoudi Beach in the early afternoon. It is a place located in close proximity to the palm forest growing by the Preveli beach. This information immediately mobilized a large force of the fire brigade, which has so far been trying to contain the fire. Several dozen people were preventively evacuated from the beaches of Preveli and Ammoudi and then transported to a safe place.

About 70 firefighters, 29 trucks and two fire-fighting helicopters stationed in Crete, as well as the Russian Beriev-200 fire-fighting aircraft take part in the fire-fighting operation. The most important goal of the firefighters was to move the line of fire away from Preveli to prevent a fire in the palm forest at all costs. Everyone remembers that 11 years ago this forest burned down completely . Today's action of the pilots is additionally hindered not only by the terrain but most of all by strong gusts of wind.
This goal appears to have been partially achieved at the moment. According to the latest information from the fire brigade, they managed to move the fire away from the palm forest, but the flames spread east towards the village of Kerame, thus posing a threat to several villages.
Unfortunately, the fire risk forecast for the next few days in Crete is very unfavorable.
