If you follow our website, you know that this year the Cretans are celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete. This round anniversary is a pretext to organize various events and exhibitions that will remind you of what happened in Crete in those days. Recently, we wrote about an open-air photo exhibition that was prepared for this occasion in Rethymno. Today we have another piece of information for people interested in this fragment of the history of Crete.
The characteristic building of St. Mark in Heraklion
In Heraklion, in the Basilica of St. Mark, an exhibition with documents, souvenirs and photos depicting the events of May 20-June 1, 1941 was also prepared. The jubilee exhibition entitled " 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete - Battle of Heraklion " was organized by the Municipality of Heraklion in cooperation with the Region of Crete and the Museum of the History of Crete. According to the organizers, the exhibition is very popular, it is visited by up to 600 people a day.
If you happen to be in Heraklion and you are interested in this period of history, it is worth visiting the Basilica. The exhibition will last until Sunday, June 27. It can be viewed at the following times:
For those who do not know Heraklion, we advise that the Basilica of St. Mark is one of the most important monuments of the city, located in front of the famous Morosini Fountain with Lions in Eleftheriou Venizelou Square in the very center of Heraklion.
