Near Dikte, the mythical cave of Zeus, hidden on the edge of the Lassithi Plateau, is the little known and rarely visited Havgas Gorge ( Χαυγά ). It is situated between the two peaks of Katharios Lakkos (1197 m) and Kefala (1269 m). The length of the Havgas Gorge is approximately 4 km, and its bottom flows from the Katharo Plateau to the Lassithi Plateau. The ravine is wild and the path is virgin. In the upper part, it can be problematic even for experienced climbers. Interestingly formed rocks rise vertically in places and remind us of… buildings made of bricks. There are many trees and other vegetation on the less steep slopes, and the gorge itself has a rich ecosystem and is home to many species of animals. You can see this gorge in the latest film by Giannis Psaurodakis.
