ZARA is a popular chain of clothing stores from Spain. So what does it have to do with Crete? Well, were it not for a coincidence, Zara stores would be known today as ZORBA. And there is no need to make anyone aware of the relationship between Alexis Zorba and Crete.
In 1963, Amancio Ortega founded a bathrobe manufacturing company in La Coruña, Spain. In 1975, while preparing to open his first shop in La Coruña, he was looking for a name for it. Enchanted by the film "Greek Zorb" by Michael Cacoyannis, he decided to use the name of the main character and name his shop that way. It soon turned out, however, that there was already a Zorba bar two blocks away in La Coruña. Two premises located in close proximity with the same name could be confusing to customers. There was therefore no room in La Coruña for two Zorbs. It became obvious that the store must have a different name.
Unfortunately, Ortega had already commissioned the letters for the signboard, which were to form the name ZORBA. However, he did not want to incur additional costs for the creation of new forms, so he decided to look for inspiration for a new name from already made letter templates. So far, he has been rearranging the letters until the sequence of characters has formed the familiar name Zara. An interesting story confirming the Greek belief that everything in this world has to do with Greece.
