Until 2019, summaries of tourist seasons in Greece showed a systematically growing interest in this country. Virtually every subsequent season brought record numbers of visitors to this country. At the end of last year, everyone expected this trend to continue and to achieve even higher results in 2020.
Ever since there were mentions of a growing epidemic, it was known that a more difficult tourist season should be expected. Back then, no one thought that the 2020 season would look completely different. The first teasers of the impending trouble appeared in February, when traditional carnival parties were canceled. The first blow followed, with the loss of early spring bookings due to the lockdown. You probably know the rest of the events: protracted travel ban, no idea of safe flights and safe tourism. Finally, a delayed start of the season, random tests at the beginning and the obligation to show a negative COVID-19 test result at some border crossings for selected countries is introduced quite quickly. You may have different opinions on the adequacy of the restrictions applied by governments, but we will not settle this.
In the season summaries that we present today, it is difficult to expect impressive numbers at the level of the 2019 season. COVID has crawled through most of the industries directly and indirectly related to tourism. In today's mini-ranking, we will only focus on the number of tourists who visited Greece in 2020. We will look at hard statistical data recently published by INSETE.
In the period from January to September 2020, 5 million international passengers were registered at Greek airports. Compared to 18.8 million people in 2019, this means a decrease by 73.4%. That is, in 2020, 13.8 million tourists from abroad "did not reach" the Greeks.
Athens airport, with 1.7 million foreign passengers, recorded a decrease of 67.3%. This year, 3.5 million foreign travelers did not reach Athens.
Just behind Athens was Heraklion airport, where only 757,000 were recorded. passengers from outside Greece. Compared to the previous year, this means a decrease by 2.2 million visitors, or 74.6% less tourists.
At the airport in Chania, the number of passengers decreased by as much as 82.7%. This year, there were only 180 thousand. foreign visitors, which, compared to the data for the previous year, means a decrease of this number by 827 thousand. people. Unfortunately, it is Crete that is the region of Greece that saw the largest drop in the number of foreign visitors (-76.7% / - 3.1 million).
Other Greek regional airports also saw very large drops in international tourists: Rhodes (-78.7% / - 1.7 million), Thessaloniki (-66.9% / - 1.3 million), Corfu (-74.3% / -1 million), Kos (-76.5% / - 827 thousand), Zakynthos (-77% / - 639 thousand).
Declines were also recorded in Greek domestic tourism. From January to September, there were only 2.7 million domestic travelers, which means a decrease by 58.4% (-3.8 million) in the same period of the previous year. The biggest decline in domestic tourism was in the Cyclades (-72.8% / - 592 thousand), mainly the island of Santorini (-74.9% / - 365 thousand). In Crete, half of last year's national tourist traffic was recorded (-50.5% / - 380 thousand). A similar percentage decrease occurred in the Dodecanese region (-51.3% / - 232 thousand). In the Ionian islands, domestic tourism decreased by -60.5% / - 132 thousand. compared to last year.
The effects of the restrictions also significantly reduced the number of tourists coming to Greece by car or other vehicles. In the period from January to September, only 2.5 million arrivals were recorded at the Greek road border crossings, which is only 23.9% (-7.8 million) of last year's. The biggest decrease was recorded in the transition between Bulgaria and Greece in Promachonas (-68.7% / - 2.1 million). Perhaps the greatest impact on reducing the number of people choosing this crossing was the obligation, introduced in mid-July, to show a negative test result for coronavirus when crossing the border. It happened just two weeks after Greece officially opened up to foreign tourism. An 86.3% decrease was recorded on the Nymfaio crossing between Greece and North Macedonia, which, compared to last year's data, means 1.3 million less journeys. This year, only 199,000 jobs were recorded at this crossing. crossings.

Normalnie w tym czasie byłby już zabukowany wyjazd na lato 2021, ale w takiej sytuacji jak teraz nie widzę sensu by to robić. Jeśli mam przechodzić testy, chodzić na wakacjach w maseczce to odpuszczam.
