If any of you had a trip to the Samaria Gorge on the weekend, unfortunately you will have to change your plans. The Chania Forest District announced today that this ravine will be closed this Saturday and Sunday due to the cyclone Ianos approaching western Crete. If the bad weather lasts longer or there is significant damage on the trail, the gorge will also be closed on Monday. However, when the weather conditions normalize and the gorge will not be damaged, Samaria will be open on Monday.

The deterioration in the weather is related to the Mediterranean cyclone, which has so far caused very serious damage in western Greece. In particular, his strength was concentrated on the Ionian Islands (including Zakynthos, Lefkada, Ithaca, and Kefalonia) and the Peloponnese. Tomorrow, a slightly weakened Ianos is to move south of the Peloponnese and west of Crete towards the central Mediterranean. Western Crete, however, is to feel the dynamics of Ianos, hence the decision to close Samaria. On Saturday, heavy rains, storms and very strong winds are expected mainly in the area of western Crete. On Sunday, however, such phenomena may occur within the entire island.
Experts point out that Mediterranean cyclones are rare and extreme weather events. Before 1990, they were virtually unheard of in this area. In recent years, however, due to climate change and the increasing sea temperature, they appear more and more often in the Mediterranean region. These cyclones are unpredictable, and their course and intensity are difficult to accurately calculate. Part of Greece was already preparing to strike Ianos since Wednesday.
Areas that found themselves in the path of the cyclone are currently in a difficult situation. There was extensive damage to the road network, shops and homes were flooded, and there were power cuts. Winds as high as 12 on the Beaufort scale were blowing up trees, damaging the electrical network. Damage to ports and coastal areas is recorded everywhere. A state of emergency was declared in both Ithaca, Zakynthos and Kefalonia. In the Fthiótida area on the mainland, the servants are also struggling with numerous floods and people trapped in homes and cars. We hope that Ianos is actually weakening and Crete will have more luck.
