Lassithi Municipality announced yesterday the inclusion of Lassithi windmills in the National Index of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This specific wind farm was the first and the largest in the world such solution in the world at the end of the 19th century. At that time, there were over 10,000 windmills on this largest plateau of Crete. Thanks to them, the inhabitants of the region could use the power of the wind to irrigate this agricultural region of Crete.
In the 1970s, the technology of these simple and cheap windmills was adopted by many Third World countries in South America, Africa and India. This saved many communities living in the poorest regions of the world. Currently in Crete, the windmills on the Lassithi plateau are being restored. Its inhabitants want to cultivate their agricultural products in the most ecological way. The costs of revitalizing individual windmills are not high, so the project is as profitable as possible. The additional benefits in the form of obtaining and using green energy are invaluable.
