At the moment, there are many indications that the upcoming season may be different than usual. The threat of coronavirus epidemics means that the number of reservations made in Crete has been steadily decreasing since January. Representatives of the tourism industry in Crete are concerned, because there is now talk of up to 30% decline. In addition to fewer new reservations, cancellations have already been made. This situation applies mainly to the spring months and the period around Easter. In addition, the largest decreases relate to hotels located in large cities, especially those in Heraklion, where tourists were expected in March.
Although the industry sentiment regarding the high season, which is still a few months away, are not pessimistic, it is difficult to predict how the events will unfold in the coming weeks. 21 new cases were confirmed at today's conference, which in Greece gives a total of 31 patients.
The general situation is not improved by the constantly growing tension between Greece and Turkey and the crisis at the Greek borders with refugees. In recent weeks, Turkey has been increasingly bold with Greece and is increasing the number of provocative behaviors.
