Just two weeks ago we informed you about the earthquake that made itself felt in the area of western Crete. Meanwhile, over the last weekend, within 80 hours, as many as 90 seismic vibrations were recorded in the western part of the island. They propagated from the same area located in the sea zone about 30 km southwest of Sfakia.
Seismic activity began last Friday and continued throughout the weekend until yesterday afternoon. They were not strong earthquakes, three of them had a strength of about 4.5 on the Richter scale, the other recorded vibrations were definitely weaker. Nevertheless, the sequence of vibrations with such an intense frequency in such a short time raised some concern for seismologists.
Scientists have so far expressed themselves rather restrained, because they do not know themselves whether it is a simple sequence of medium earthquakes or activity heralding a stronger phenomenon. It is too early to draw any conclusions.
What worries seismologists the most is the area where these shocks occur. Crete is located in the central part of the Greek seismic arc, which is an area of high activity. Along the shores of southern Crete, from Paleochora to Sfakia, there is a large tectonic fault, but the data indicate that it is most likely not causing these vibrations.
Information services on this occasion reminded of the devastating earthquake that struck this region of Greece 93 years ago. On June 26, 1926, an earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale affected Crete, Rhodes, and the eastern Mediterranean. Hundreds of houses, churches and other buildings were destroyed in Heraklion and the rest of the island. As a result of that catastrophe, about 10,000 people were deprived of their homes.
Seismologists have been expecting a repeat of such a strong phenomenon in this area for a long time. However, we sincerely hope that the earth will "shake up" and calm down again.
[EDIT]
Yesterday at 23:58 another magnitude 5.4 earthquake was recorded. The epicenter took place northeast of Agios Nikolaos at a depth of 80 km. The quake was felt in Agios Nikolaos, Paleokastro Lasithiou and Heraklion.
