Money is one of the inventions of humanity that has accompanied us from antiquity to the present day. And although nowadays we use them in digital form more and more often in everyday life, yet certainly in every modern home there will still be at least one zloty, euro or at least a few groszy. Money, especially coins, is devoted to the latest exhibition at the Museum of Ancient Eleftherna, which will be available to visitors until mid-December. The exhibition entitled "Cities of Crete - a coin certificate" is an opportunity to learn about the history of the most important ancient urban centers through the money and its flow on the island.
The exhibition presents a total of 124 coins from all regions of Crete and from various periods of the island's history. Each of them reflects a fragment of the history of the city-state in which it was beaten. Archaeologists estimate that in antiquity in Crete there were up to forty mints in which not only were minted unique local coin designs, but also duplicated those that hit the island as a result of trade.
This exhibition was prepared thanks to the cooperation of a number of organizations, among which it is worth mentioning: Ephorate of Antiquities of Rethymno, the University of Crete and of course the Museum of Ancient Eleftherna. An important partner of this exhibition is also Alpha Bank, which has made available its collection of ancient coins.
The exhibition will be available to visitors until December 15. The exhibition of coins is complemented by the presentation of multimedia content presented using the latest digital technologies. This should not come as a surprise, because the Museum of Ancient Elefherna is one of the most modern facilities of this type in Crete. All materials presented at this exhibition and the catalog were prepared in two languages - Greek and English.
If you have not had the opportunity to visit this museum so far, we strongly urge you to do so. Before visiting, we also suggest that you read our description of this object: Archaeological Museum in Eleftherna .
