A serious incident in Samaria

A very dangerous incident occurred today in the Samaria Gorge. Around 8 o'clock a small fire was noticed. According to information posted on flashnews.gr , one of the trees (most likely pine) located by the walking trail caught the fire. The place was about 6.5 kilometers from the village of Agia Roumeli. Thanks to the efficient action taken by the employees of the Samaria National Park, this situation was managed very quickly.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the source of the fire. For now, forest officials are very reserved when giving reasons. It is worth emphasizing that, despite the lack of staff, the local services worked in such a professional way that even the intervention of the fire brigade was not required. Nevertheless, this situation must be considered a very dangerous event, which in a less favorable situation could transform into a difficult to control element.

Over the past years, there have been fires in Crete that destroyed places considered to be tourist attractions. It is worth mentioning how in 2010 the fire destroyed Preveli beach .
