An interesting initiative has just ended in Chania to clean up this urban public space and beaches by a team of volunteers. 50 people took part in the " Chania Trash Parties " project, which collected 247 rubbish bags during six meetings organized within 1.5 months. Only the last meeting resulted in collecting as many as 48 rubbish bags. The activities of this group were aimed not only to help maintain cleanliness, but also to raise awareness of this topic. Organizers and volunteers hope to continue their activities next year.

The amount of collected waste shows how much similar initiatives are needed and how big the problem is garbage, especially for beaches. On windy days, plastic cups and bottles left in which drinks are served are quickly blown off into the sea by the wind.

On this occasion, it is also worth mentioning a similar action that took place in August in Paleochora. A couple of tourists staying there on vacation decided to devote part of their time to collecting rubbish. On the first day, they wrote that they underestimated the problem and did not take enough trash bags with them. They posted information about this campaign on a local Facebook group, thanks to which other people joined them in the following days. Activities were also supported by three local bars and some residents. Unfortunately, as Alexandra and Richard wrote, some tourists sitting in bars and taverns across the street laughed at their actions, clearly not understanding their reasons.
