Heat wave in Crete

The heat wave, which currently passes over much of Europe, also reached Greece. A significant rise in temperature in Crete is expected from today. Synoptics predict that for the greater part of the island in the afternoon hours will be exceeded the magic barrier 30'C. A particularly hot place in Crete will traditionally be the Messara region, where at the hottest moment of the day, the mercury can show up to 37'C.

Of course, the values given above refer to measurements performed in accordance with the art of meteorology. The air temperature is checked using specialized sensors, which are located in a standardized in terms of construction of a meteorological station usually located above the ground level. Measurements performed in this way are given as shade temperature. It is worth noting here that when you are on the beach or in the field, the temperature can be much higher. This is especially true if you are in a place exposed directly to the sun.

Much closer to how everyone will receive the upcoming heat wave is the expected temperature perceived. Depending on the area of Crete, this value according to weather forecasts is to reach even 42'C. This maximum perceived temperature is expected for Ierapetra this Thursday.

If you are anticipating an intense tour of Crete these days, we recommend following a few rules to help you survive such hot weather:

• the body should be properly irrigated
• Avoid intense exercise during midday hours. If possible, it is better to stop walking on gorges and hiking trails (even those higher up in the mountains) on slightly cooler days.
• such temperatures are easier to bear by the sea in the shade of an umbrella.
• remember to use creams with a filter, have a headgear and sunglasses
• airy light clothing will be the best
• in taverns choose light and not too greasy dishes
• if possible, cool the body by spraying water on its surface (it is also worth to regularly wash the face, hands and neck with cold water)

Pamiętaj tylko, że w artykule podawane są temperatury wskazywane przez oficjalne stacje meteo. Temperatury wskazywane przez domowe termometry będą dużo wyższe, podobnie zresztą tak jak i ta która nazywana jest odczuwaną.
