Today on the anniversary of events on March 25, 1821 , the Greeks celebrate Independence Day. 198 years ago, on the feast of the Annunciation of the Mother of God, one of the most important days of the Orthodox church, the Archbishop of Germanos blessed the white banner with the blue cross in the monastery of Agia Lavra. This symbolic gesture became the beginning of the revolution announced on that day, which was to lead to the creation of an independent Greece. After more than 400 years of continuous resistance to the Turkish occupation, hope for an independent state emerged among the Greeks. This chance was reinforced by the fact of the fall of the Ottoman Empire, which since 1453 since the fall of Constantinople, occupied the territory of present Greece.
Only eight years of heavy fighting and Russian troops besieging the walls of Constantinople (current Istanbul) forced Sultan Mahmud II to sign the Treaty in Andrianople, which guaranteed the future independence of Greece. On August 30, 1832, another treaty was signed, which defined the political system and the future borders of Greece at that time.
Today, like every year of the day, the Greeks celebrated and took part in parades, which are usually organized in many places. In the movie above, you can see what the present-day parade in Heraklion looked like.
It is also worth knowing that the traditional Christmas dish of that day is cod fried in dough served with skordalia , i.e. a garlic paste of bread or potatoes. Traditionally, this dish was made of salted cod, which in this form was formerly also available in the depths of Greek land, where it was difficult to get raw fresh fish.
