Agia Pelagia is one of the most popular tourist towns located in the area of Heraklion. For years, one of the major problems of this place is the relatively small beach, which is far from the needs posed by modern tourism. A modest strip of sand stretching along the coast, which in the narrowest places has a width of only 3 meters, does not allow to fully use the potential of this bay. The beach is notoriously crowded, and the sun loungers are set on practically every spare piece.
It seems, however, that in the future this situation may change dramatically. The Greek ministry responsible for environmental protection has issued a positive decision for the project, which aims to expand the beach.
The authorities of the municipality of Malevizi estimate that at the cost of € 1.75 million, work will be carried out that includes activities such as protection against erosion, the creation of a marina for small boats. The project also provides for the revitalization of the beach area, including the increase of its width to as much as 40 meters (with a minimum width of 20 meters). These activities are to allow for increasing the number of bathers on this beach and for better organization of sunbeds set up here. As part of the activities carried out, work will also be carried out related to the removal of pollution located in the area of this bay.
